It is wonderful to be able to announce that we now have a Blue Plaque installed on the iconic front door of 78 Derngate in the name of WJ Bassett-Lowke.
This was made possible as part of the recent WNC Blue Plaque scheme undertaken in conjunction with Arts Council England’s NPO ‘Histories of Northamptonshire’ project delivered most successfully by Northampton Museum and Art Gallery between September 2025 and February this year.
A most significant recognition and historical marker to commemorate the loyal Northamptonian and local businessman, Bassett-Lowke, who lived here with his wife Florence Jane Jones from 1917-26. He commissioned the Glaswegian architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh to transform his ordinary Georgian terraced home into something extraordinary where some original features and beautiful replicas can be seen by the public today.
The Blue Plaque fits in beautifully and looks as if it has somehow always been there!
