It is our aim to do this by the following means:

About the Friends of 78 Derngate

The Friends of 78 Derngate was established in 1997 with the aim of raising money and public awareness in support of the 78 Derngate Trust. The Friends were a key group in having 78 Derngate restored and opened to the public - true 'grassroots' social action in the preservation of this historic building.

The Friends continue to support the work of The Trust and also enjoy a regular programme of events, social activities and visits. Members are free to participate in as much or as little as they wish; many members simply wish to give financial support and receive member benefits whilst others are more active. Whatever your level of interest; we have something to offer you.

Volunteering at 78 Derngate

What do Volunteers Do?

Depending on the individual and the skills they can offer, our volunteers help out in two main areas:

Front of House – these volunteers have responsibility for welcoming visitors, offering help and advice as well as looking after sales and stock in the shop. These volunteers will be the visitors' first point of contact and need to be friendly, helpful and welcoming.

Guided Tours – 78 Derngate is a very beautiful, small house, with a wonderful story to tell. Our Guides find their work very rewarding and enjoy interacting with our visitors. In order to be a guide, you need to read up a little on the history of the house, learn about the story each room has to tell and then shadow an existing guide for a short period of time. Guides need to be able to speak confidently to groups of visitors (up to 12) and have an interest in the house and its history.

How much time would I have to give?

The time each volunteer can commit to working with us at 78 Derngate is entirely up to them. 78 Derngate is open from February to Christmas, Tuesday to Sunday. Every day we have two ‘shifts' – 10am to 1.30pm and 1pm to 5pm .

In order to keep 78 Derngate up and running and open to the public, we need up to three volunteers for each ‘shift'. If you have just one morning or afternoon per week, one day per month or more, then we would be very grateful for your input.

What are the benefits?

Volunteers don't get paid, but we do reimburse travel and parking expenses. Volunteers benefit from other perks including at least one party each year, the chance to be involved with the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and work with like-minded, interesting people who want to ‘put something back'.
