Can you help? Have you thought about doing a little voluntary work to fit in with your schedule? 78 Derngate Volunteers At 78 Derngate we rely on a wonderful group of people known as the 78 Derngate Northampton Trust Volunteers. Because 78 Derngate is a charitable trust and non-profit making, we urgently need volunteers to help keep the house open and operating for our visitors to enjoy. Who are the Volunteers? The 78 Derngate Volunteers come from all walks of life. Many of our volunteers are retired and have some time during the week or weekends to offer their services. Other volunteers are still working full or part time, but still value their time doing voluntary work for 78 Derngate. What do Volunteers Do? Depending on the individual and the skills they can offer, our volunteers help out in four main areas: Front of House – these volunteers have responsibility for welcoming visitors, offering help and advice as well as looking after sales and stock in the shop. These volunteers will be the visitors' first point of contact and need to be friendly, helpful and welcoming. Guided Tours – 78 Derngate is a very beautiful, small house, with a wonderful story to tell. Our Guides find their work very rewarding and enjoy interacting with our visitors. In order to be a guide, you need to read up a little on the history of the house, learn about the story each room has to tell and then shadow an existing guide for a short period of time. Guides need to be able to speak confidently to groups of visitors (up to 10) and have an interest in the house and its history. How much time would I have to give? The time each volunteer can commit to working with us at 78 Derngate is entirely up to them. 78 Derngate is open from February to Christmas, Tuesday to Sunday. Everyday we have two ‘shifts' – 10am to 2pm and 1pm to 5pm . In order to keep 78 Derngate up and running and open to the public, we need a minimum of four guides for each ‘shift'. If you have just one morning or afternoon per week, one day per month or more, then we would be very grateful for your input. Do Volunteers get paid? What are the benefits? Volunteers don't get paid, but we do reimburse travel and parking expenses. Volunteers do benefit from other perks including at least one party each year, the chance to be involved with the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and work with like-minded, interesting people who want to ‘put something back'. What do I do now?
